                    2012 WORKSHOPS

                    We offer  half- to five-day workshops in the fine arts, master crafts, and heritage craft classes—from painting to basket weaving, writing and children's classes, from May to October. Your experience will be enhanced by small class sizes, exceptional instructors and an inspiring creative environment. There is something for everyone!

                    Persian Art Process with Lenore DePree – June 25
                    Spend a day exploring the world of Middle Eastern art, as you investigate "The Art of the Book", the exquisite manuscript illustrations painted to illustrate the works of Persian poets. Focus on how structure and coloration can be used as a source for your own works of art. $105 (0625LD)

                    Figure Drawing Using the Live Model with Ralph Herring Jr. – August 13-14
                    Learn what makes a successful figure drawing; from posing and lighting of a model, to placement of the figure on paper and measuring for correct proportions to drawing in tonal values. All media, all levels. $210 and additional model fees. (0813RH)

                    Seeing:  The Power of a True Artist with Robert Way – August 16-18
                    Elevate your powers of observation, as you enhance your skills of perception and replicating colors, by exploring the various ways to measure, make comparisons, define values, see shapes, accurately distinguish proportional relationships and identify colors hiding in plain sight.                     Drawing the Landscape with Stephen Shoemaker – September 8
                    Draw what you see with confidence, as you learn the basics of landscape drawing in this one day workshop. Focus on utilizing the main elements of drawing: shape, contour line, composition, light and shadow, texture and perspective to accurately sketch the landscape. $105 (0908SS)

                    Fabric Collage with Theresa Curd – June 9
                    Create you own one-of-a-kind fused collage art quilt in a day, as you learn how to make  your own fabric full of color, texture, and personal design through paint and stamping. Then use the painted fabrics and even specialized papers to design, cut, and assemble your own collage. Sewing machines are optional. $105 and additional $10 materials fee.(0609TC)

                    Fibonacci Basket with Cathey Purvey - June 16

                    Learn the secret to creating your own hand-woven basket inspired by nature itself. This technique, known as Fibonacci, uses a simple math formula to create a unique twill pattern that is both beautiful and pleasing to the eye. $75 (0616CP)

                    Collage / Assemblage! Intergenerational Workshop with Sue Boggs & Cora Mae Pipkin - July 9-11, 9am – 12 noon.
                    Join your child in a truly creative experience as you integrate two dimensional family memorabilia such as: photos, tickets stubs, programs, and refrigerator art, along with other mediums to complete an unforgettable work that will be sure to become a family heirloom.  TBD.                     Exploring Indigo Magic with Janine LeBlanc & Susan Oliver Fennell – July 12-14
                    Create your own ‘Indigo Magic’ as you explore a variety of resist dyeing, or Shibori techniques used by the Japanese, such as itajime (clamp resist) and arashi (pole wrapping), tying and stitching. You will complete several truly unique scarves. $315 and additional $35 materials fee. (0712JL)

                    Rug Hook a Log Cabin Design with Cheryl Roberts - July 23
                    Enjoy making a beautiful pillow, bag, chair pad or mat while practicing traditional rug hooking techniques.  Create a log cabin design using dyed wool strips and yarn on a backing of monk's cloth.  Also includes dyeing demos using yarn or wool strips.                     Fabulous Airey Fairy Scarf with Chad Alice Hagen - July 23
                    Learn the joy of working with fine merino fleece as you create a stunning hand felted fabulous airy fairy scarf.  Demonstrations and exercises in laying out and wet felting using uniquely hand dyed merino roving.  Note: This workshop will require a considerable amount of time standing. $105 and additional $20 material fee.                     Mokume Bark Scarf with Chad Alice Hagen - July 24
                    Create your own unique Mokume Bark Scarf in a day; as you dye your own merino needle punch batts and learn how to use the traditional Japanese Mokume resist stitch and over-dyeing techniques in a resist dyebath. $105 and additional $20 material fee. (0724CH)

                    Warp Yarn Painting and Weaving with Alan Huston - July 25
                    Bring your weaving to life by creating your very own hand-painted warp. You will use paint and dyes to spontaneously color the warp and even the weft. For experienced weavers, both on rigid heddle and floor looms. $105. (0725AH)

                    Needle Felting a Teddy Bear with Jane Plaugher – July 26
                    Get acquainted with the traditional art of using a barbed needle to tangle wool fiber and shape into both flat and three dimensional objects as you create your own cuddly teddy bear. The possibilities are endless, limited only by your imagination. $105 (0726JP)

                    Not Your Grandmother’s Die Pot with Kathrin Weber – July 26-27
                    Renew your creative license as you approach the dyeing process with a spirit of experimentation; learning how to create a full spectrum of vibrant and colorfast cellulose (cotton, linen, rayon, bamboo, etc) yarn. Focus on use of professional dyes and setting up your own dye kitchen. $210 and additional $20 materials fee . (0726KW)

                    Felting Fun with Hats and Scarves with Rachel Nicholson – September 24-25
                    Experience the art of Wet Felting as you create a ‘Nuno’ scarf, with hand dyed silk gauze and merino wool. And, gain experience in measuring for a custom fit and using a hat block for a more professionally finished hat. Options for hats will include cloches, berets and free form styles. $210 and additional $40 materials fee. (0924RN)

                    Enjoy a fun and informative Hammer Dulcimer workshop as you learn a wide variety of ideas and techniques for arranging and backup - for advanced beginners and above. $40 (0630KKH)

                    Clawhammer Banjo Workshop with Brad Kolodner - June 30, 9am - 12 noon. Master the basic clawhammer style while exploring more advanced rhythmic and melodic techniques, with a focus on playing dynamically, expressively and achieve the old-time sound on the 5-string banjo. $40 (0630BK)

                    Default Bowing - Fiddle Workshop with Ken Kolodner – June 30, 12:30 – 2:30 pm
                    Enhance your ability to play fiddle tunes as you focus on the bow arm, especially the 'default bowing' system/techniques such as 3-1 bowing, ghost bows and more – for all levels of players. $30 (0630KKF)

                    Alla Prima Oil Painting – Plein Air Painting with Amy Evans – June 4-6

                    Painting Your ‘Masterpiece’ in Oil with Ron Walters – June 28-29

                    Mastering Trees with Oils with Jon Houglum - July 19-20
                    Take your landscapes to the next level as you learn how to paint forest and trees with ease. Techniques developed by the instructor with an emphasis on various visual tools for suggesting background, middle ground and foreground colors, thus giving a sense of great depth to your paintings. $210 (0719JH)

                    Landscape Painting Workshop – Just for Beginners with Jon Houglum – July 21

                    An Artist’s Guide to Landscape Painting with Harold Frontz – August 2-4

                    Fearless Oil Painting with Lenore De Pree – August 27-29

                    Capturing Light and Color in the Landscape: A Plein Air Workshop with Diane Pike – September 5-7
                    Refine you ability to capturing light and color in the landscape, as you learn how sunlight affects the perception you have of color and how to translate the many keys of light and shadow to your canvas. Prior experience with oils necessary. $315 (0905DP)

                    Under-painting and Layering in Pastel with Betty Hendrix- May 23-25
                    Sharpen your skills and hone your ability, as you discover the versatility of “Soft Pastels” and learn how to achieve a rich under-painting through layering.                     Introduction to Pastel with Paul deMarrias – June 21-22
                    Discover how color placement can add “spark” to your paintings as you access the colorful world of pastel. You will gain experience in exploiting the medium’s rich colors, application techniques, creating your own sanded surface, and working in a mixed media approach. $210 (0621PD)

                    Starting from Scratch with Carol Ann Herring – May 19
                    Create your own landscape in a day; as you learn how to manipulate colors, brushes and papers.  Demonstrations and exercises in color temperature, tonal values, color intensity, brush strokes and various effects achieved by the unique characteristics of watercolor papers.  This workshop is perfect for beginners and re-starters alike. $105 (0519CH)

                    Illustrating Plants in Watercolor Pencil with Redenta Saprano – June 12-14
                    Explore the versatility of watercolor pencils as you learn an array of traditional botanical illustration techniques. Begin with graphite then detail and enrich your painting with an overlay of colored pencil, using various application techniques in both wet and dry.  $315 (0612RS)

                    Dry Brush Watercolor with Stephen Shoemaker – June 18-19
                    Discover the technique of Drybrush, used by Andrew Wyeth, and learn how to create unique painting effects that cannot be produced by any other method. It utilizes an oil brush technique with watercolor paints that creates more vivid colors, higher color saturation and overall better contrast of light and dark. $210 (0618SS)

                    Non-Traditional Chinese Landscape with Freda Lee McCann – July 16-18
                    Renew your excitement for creating the landscape as you learn an Abstract Asian style of painting and collage.                     Watercolor – Brushing UP with Leslie Frontz - July 30-Aug 1
                    Unlock your creativity and freedom by mastering the fundamentals of technique and design with watercolors.                     Exploring Watercolor with David Daniels – August 8-10
                    Take your watercolor to the next level, as you learn how to achieve unsurpassed brilliance and jewel-like clarity in your watercolor paintings, by exploring the methods of using multiple glazes over wet-into-wet passages and masking agents. Demonstrations and techniques in careful construction of a watercolor, using preliminary sketches and value studies inspired by nature and dedicated to the ideals of beauty. $315 (0808DD)

                    Sneaking-Up on Watercolor with Carol Ann Herring – August 22-24
                    Learn techniques to make painting landscapes, portraits, still-life, and even abstracts easier by “sneaking up” on watercolor’s tricky ways. Focus on utilizing and combining some of the “friends of watercolor”---India Ink, Watercolor Pencils, Pastel, Opaque Watercolor, Oil Pastels, and Gesso. $315 (0822CH)
